Build a Sustainable Future Through Two Interdisciplinary Master Degrees at Georgetown University

M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management

The Earth Commons Institute along with the McDonough School of Business and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences created this STEM-designated degree with the understanding that science and business principles are both critical to achieving sustainability goals across the globe.

Recent MS-ESM graduate, Max Scheiner (MS-ESM’24), reflects on his experience while in the program.  “One of the key aspects that impressed me about Georgetown’s [MS-ESM] program was its academic structure. The MS-ESM program provided ample opportunities to develop skills in areas such as environmental policy, sustainability management, and climate change adaptation. This holistic approach to sustainability was exactly what I was looking for.

In addition to the academic structure, the program’s location benefits were also a major draw for me. Georgetown’s campus is located in the heart of Washington, D.C., which provided me with unique access to policymakers, industry leaders, and other experts in the sustainability field. This location also allowed me to attend various sustainability-related events and conferences, which further enhanced my knowledge and skills.

The cohort model was another significant factor that contributed to my decision to attend Georgetown. The program’s close-knit community allowed me to form strong bonds with my classmates, who came from different parts of the world. Celebrating with them after completing our final presentations was an unforgettable experience.”

Future global business leaders understand the importance of sustainability within a corporate environment, and MS-ESM prepares students for a career that pushes the conversation forward and centers real impact.

M.S. in Environment and International Affairs

In partnership with the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Earth Commons Institute, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Georgetown University launched the M.S. in Environment and International Affairs (MS-EIA) degree in Fall 2024.

MS-EIA is a STEM-designated degree that integrates training in international affairs and the environmental sciences into a single interdisciplinary program where each course seamlessly incorporates both disciplines to tackle the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Graduates are equipped with the latest scientific and analytical tools combined with international experiential learning, ready to pursue careers in public, private, nonprofit and international organizations.

Program Director, Dr. Marcus King, shares his vision for the program, “the M.S. in Environment and International Affairs is unique for several reasons. We have a core curriculum that provides a grounding in global environmental science, and also global environmental politics. In addition, we have flexibility in our curriculum where we offer   three concentrations.   including Sustainable Energy, Global Environmental Science, and Global Environmental Politics and Security.”

Students in the program will emerge with a global vision, a strong foundation in environmental justice and the skillset to realize a sustainable future.
