The University of Chicago’s MS in Applied Data Science program prepares students to solve complex, real-world problems through artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven decision-making. As part of the University’s Physical Sciences Division and Data Science Institute, students join an interdisciplinary community shaping the future of data science across industries, including technology, healthcare, finance, consulting, and research. Courses are taught live by faculty and industry leaders with experience at organizations such as Google, Caterpillar, and Barclays, giving students direct insight into how data science and AI are applied in practice.
The curriculum emphasizes applied learning through project-based coursework and a capstone experience where students partner with organizations to solve real business and technical challenges. Students develop expertise in areas including data engineering, natural language processing, and cloud computing, while learning how to communicate insights that drive meaningful impact.
Students can study full-time or part-time, either online or at the downtown Chicago campus in NBC Tower. Online students participate in live, synchronous classes alongside peers and faculty while benefiting from collaborative projects, networking opportunities, and an optional immersion experience in Chicago.
The University of Chicago also offers interdisciplinary pathways for students interested in combining data science with other professional fields. In partnership with UChicago’s Booth School of Business, students may pursue a Joint MBA/MS in Applied Data Science, integrating data science with business strategy and leadership. The University has also announced a Joint MD/MS in Applied Data Science program with the Pritzker School of Medicine, reflecting the growing role of AI and data science in healthcare and clinical innovation.
